Daniel Jones’ season is officially over.

The New York Giants announced Monday that they have placed both Jones and wide receiver Sterling Shepard on injured reserve, which means they will both miss the final three games of the year.

Shepard went down with a torn Achilles tendon late in Sunday’s loss to Dallas, so it was known his season was done, but Jones’ future has been a mystery thanks to a neck injury he suffered against Philadelphia last month that the team has been very cautious and guarded in talking about.

On Monday, however, the team’s Senior Vice President of Medical Services and Head Athletic Trainer, Ronnie Barnes released the following statement on Jones:

"Over the course of the past few weeks, Daniel has been examined by Dr. Frank Cammisa of Hospital for Special Surgery and Dr. Robert Watkins of the Marina Spine Center at Marina Del Rey Hospital. Our medical team has continued to consult with Dr. Cammisa and Dr. Watkins regarding Daniel's condition and symptoms, and at this point, Daniel has not been cleared for contact. We felt the prudent decision was to place Daniel on injured reserve for the remainder of the season. With continued rest and treatment, we expect a full recovery."

Head coach Joe Judge clarified on Monday that Jones’ issue is a neck sprain, and that the move to place him on IR is “precautionary,” with the injury being one he doesn’t believe Jones will have to worry about long-term, nor one that will require surgery.

As it relates to who will start the Giants’ final three games, Judge said after Sunday’s loss, where Mike Glennon was benched late in favor of Jake Fromm, that the team would discuss their best approach for this Sunday’s rematch in Philly, and he reiterated that on Monday.

Beyond that, Judge wouldn’t discuss Jones’ future re: the Giants’ need to make a decision on his fifth-year option, only offering that “I’ve seen enough growth from Daniel to see he’s the one to go ahead and play with."

The team also has Brian Lewerke on the practice squad, and also could bring back Clayton Thorson, a former practice squad QB who was worked out as insurance a couple weeks ago in case Mike Glennon didn’t clear concussion protocol in time for last week’s game in Los Angeles.
