The quarterback-turned-ESPN personality recently appeared at “Run Rich Run,” a fundraiser organized by NFL Network host Rich Eisen benefiting St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. This year’s event was held at the Rose Bowl with Griffin, Cris Carter, Michael Vick, Rod Woodson and Eric Metcalf (Broncos great Terrell Davis bowed out due to injury) among those competing. RG3 crossed the tape first with a 4.48, only a hair slower than the 40 time he submitted a decade ago at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis (4.41). Michael Vick finished a close second at 4.57, still pretty remarkable for a 41-year-old (he’ll be 42 next month) who hasn’t taken an NFL snap in seven years.

It’s crazy to think that at 32, RG3, a decorated hurdler during his time at Baylor, where he earned all-conference honors as a freshman in 2008 before shifting his attention to football, is still faster than any quarterback drafted this year (Falcons third-rounder Desmond Ridder paced all QBs at the Combine with a 4.52). Griffin was in a hurry too, needing to book it back to L.A. (about a 20-25-minute drive, depending on traffic) for the start of USC’s Spring Game at the Coliseum, which he was covering for ESPN.

Impressed by his performance in Pasadena, Griffin said he’s already been contacted by a handful of NFL teams in search of a veteran backup. The former Heisman winner last played in 2020, serving as a mentor to Lamar Jackson in Baltimore. He made one start that season, filling in against the Steelers in Week 12 (the Ravens were shorthanded due to a COVID outbreak). Despite his success at ESPN, emerging as a rising star in sports media, Griffin would consider a return under the right circumstances, with Eisen noting the former Rookie of the Year’s “desire” to resume his career. Griffin, it should be noted, has never officially retired.
