An intrepid basketball reporter turned heads on Monday night -- when he was the first to report a notable NFL transaction.

Prominent basketball scribe Shams Charania appeared to have the scoop regarding an agreement on a new one-year, $12M contract between the New Orleans Saints and quarterback Jameis Winston.

While not exactly a bombshell -- the sides were previously reported to be engaged in talks -- Charania's scooplet nonetheless caught the attention of his colleagues on the football beat.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, for one, responded on social media with what appeared to be good-natured ribbing.

“Stick to basketball," Rapoport said. "But yes, this is true. Jameis back to the #Saints.”

For Charania, who in recent years has joined the ranks of media celebrities known for breaking such stories, the football scoop wasn't totally without precedent.

Last year, the hoops reporter, claiming he was inspired by "boredom," came out of nowhere when he reported during the NFL Draft that the Miami Dolphins would be selecting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Charania later told Awful Announcing the Tua story "came across his phone," and he couldn't help but to share it.

The Winston signing came within days after it was reported the Saints had re-signed quarterback Taysom Hill, with both moves meant to shore up the position in the wake of Drew Brees' retirement.
