Throughout his time in New York, Yankees manager Aaron Boone has been good for at least one viral meltdown a year. This year he got it out of the way early, blowing up at home plate umpire Marty Foster in Wednesday night’s loss to Toronto, which snapped the Bombers’ 11-game winning streak. The Yankees skipper took exception to a low strike call on Aaron Judge, who, as Boone reminded Foster, is “six f---ing seven!”
You may recall, Boone was ejected under similar circumstances in 2019, getting his money’s worth with an epic tantrum punctuated by the catchphrase “savages in the box.” The Yankees would later use that quote as a rallying cry of sorts, channeling Boone’s manic energy into their first division title in seven years.
Time will tell if “He’s six f---ing seven!” has the same staying power as his legendary “savages in the box” rant, but Boone’s words have already been immortalized on a t-shirt available for sale on RotoWear.com. Available in sizes XS through 4XL, the MLBPA officially-licensed shirts are going for $28 a pop.
Judge presents an unusual case in that he’s far larger than the average big-leaguer (6’7”/282), necessitating a drastically different strike zone. Umpires have faced an unusual amount of scrutiny this year (who could forget Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber going berserk on Angel Hernandez?), with human error continuing to impact games. The minor leagues have experimented with “robot” umps behind the plate and it could be only a matter of time until MLB scraps umpires for an automated strike zone. But until that day comes, expect plenty more tirades from Boone, whose charming vulgarity continues to be a merchandising gold mine for online retailers.
