You better believe the Philadelphia Eagles’ win over the New York Jets on Sunday meant a whole lot to Gardner Minshew.
The backup quarterback made his first start with the Eagles and played flawlessly, completing 20 of 25 pass attempts for 242 yards and two touchdowns in a 33-18 victory.
The win moved the Eagles to 6-7 and kept them in the thick of the playoff race, but it was also a major personal victory for Minshew, who got his first win as a starter since Week 1 of last year when he was with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Following the game, Minshew, dressed in his "Top Gun" wardrobe, met up with his father before boarding the team bus and had quite an emotional — and aggressive — celebration with his dad.
Minshew’s performance came just before the Eagles bye week and it was good enough where there will likely be some debate the next two weeks over who should be the starter: Minshew or Jalen Hurts?
Hurts was inactive because of a sprained left ankle, but head coach Nick Sirianni assured that if healthy, Hurts will be the team’s starter.
Yet, Sirianni also commended Minshew’s game.
“I thought he played a really good game,” Sirianni told reporters after the game. “Our message to Gardner was, go out there and be yourself, protect the football. You’ve got a good supporting cast around you … so go out there and be yourself and that’s going to be enough. And he did. He went out there and played a really outstanding game.”
