Patrick Mahomes has spent the last few years establishing himself as the best quarterback in the NFL, but has someone else already taken that mantle away from him?
Well, it depends on who you ask.
During Sunday’s FOX pregame show, analyst and former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson was ready to pass that torch to Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.
“If I was drafting in the NFL today, of all the players, my No. 1 pick would be Justin Herbert,” Johnson said.
The other hosts in unison asked, “Over Mahomes?”
“Over Mahomes,” Johnson responded, with Michael Strahan adding, “I could see it.”
Herbert burst onto the scene as a rookie last year and has played exceptionally well through four games this season, entering Sunday having completed 68.9% of his pass attempts for 1,178 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions.
He also has the Chargers atop the AFC West at 3-1 and already got the best of the Chiefs in Week 3 with a four-touchdown performance.
Meanwhile, Mahomes is still having arguably the better season, statistically, thus far. He entered Sunday having completed 72.3% of his pass attempts for 1,218 yards and 14 touchdowns to four interceptions.
Yet, the Chiefs are 2-2 and Mahomes’ turnovers have come at costly moments in games.
There has also been a bit of a budding rivalry between Mahomes and Herbert this year after Mahomes was caught saying at a charity golf event he’ll “believe it when I see it” when a fan told him to look out for Herbert.
The comment was made in jest, but Herbert has appeared to have already put himself in the conversation and gotten the best of Mahomes once this season.
We’ll just have to see how the rest of the season plays out.
