Even if Russell Wilson was only being diplomatic for the sake of keeping a good relationship with the Seattle Seahawks, it doesn't sound like he's all that interested in returning home to play for the Washington Commanders.
Not long after the 2021 season, reports indicated that Wilson wanted to "explore all options" and see what else might be out there for him this offseason. This was after reports circulated wildly the offseason prior that Wilson had interest in being traded from Seattle, where he hasn't advanced past the division round of the playoffs since the 2014 season (when the Seahawks lost to the Patriots in the Super Bowl).
It was the Pro Bowl that first ignited all the Wilson-to-DC buzz in early February, when Seattle's franchise QB took a seemingly innocuous photo with Commanders defensive lineman Jonathan Allen. A short time later, Kevin Sheehan passed along a nugget on The Team 980, saying that Wilson "is not against being traded to Washington."
Appearing on the "Today Show" with wife Ciara Tuesday morning, Wilson was asked by Craig Melvin if he would ever consider moving back east and playing for a team in the nation's capital. The 33-year-old quarterback grew up in Richmond.
"Listen now, I love the east coast but I think the west coast is better for me right now," Wilson said. "I've got my whole family over here."
"I'm from Richmond, I know what you mean," he added. "I've got people hitting me up every day, all my friends and all that from east coast. But Seattle's the place that I'm at right now and I love it, and it's great, man."
If you're a frustrated Commanders fan who's actively rooting for a miracle this offseason, all hope is not lost. Wilson did not say no to Washington; he merely said the west coast is "better" for him right now and that he loves Seattle, "the place that I'm at right now."
That Hail Mary does seem to be drifting further and further out of reach, though. Aaron Rodgers, who's in a similar situation as Wilson with his own respective Packers, reportedly wants no part of Washington.
