The Cowboys’ social media team took a big L Tuesday, errantly announcing Randy Gregory’s return to Big D. Minutes after the Cowboys' tweet went live, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported the free-agent pass-rusher had agreed to a five-year deal, not with Dallas, but with Denver.

The Broncos later confirmed the news, alluding to Gregory’s signing with a GIF of late-night host Stephen Colbert mouthing the word “surprise.”

What a cruel trick to play, getting fans’ hopes up, only for Denver to rain on the parade, breaking up the party like Lucy pulling a fast one on Charlie Brown. Twitter gaffes are a dime a dozen in today’s “first is everything” world of social media, but jumping the gun on a reported signing is an especially bad look, dinging the Cowboys’ credibility while embarrassing all involved.

The online peanut gallery loves to gang up on Dallas when America’s team steps in it and Tuesday was no different in that regard, with Twitter trolls predictably coming out in full force.

The Broncos may not be done either with Russell Wilson actively “recruiting” his former Seahawks teammate Bobby Wagner to join him in Denver. The eight-time Pro Bowler is also said to be on the Cowboys’ radar because of his ties to Dan Quinn, who was Wagner’s defensive coordinator in Seattle for two seasons including 2013, when the Seahawks routed the Broncos to win Super Bowl XLVIII.

A second-round pick of the Cowboys in 2015, Gregory has served multiple suspensions for violations of the league’s drug policy throughout his career, but has been a productive player when available, earning PFF’s No. 12 pass-rushing grade out of 107 qualified edge defenders this past season.
