Beating Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs isn’t easy. The Kansas City Chiefs signal caller is set to compete for his third straight Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 9 in hopes of securing the NFL’s first-ever three-peat. It will be his fourth career Super Bowl appearance and the Philadelphia Eagles have a chance to join an exclusive group if they’re able to topple the future Hall of Fame signal caller on the big stage.
Mahomes is a ridiculous 17-3 straight up in the postseason. The Chiefs star hasn’t lost since falling short to the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2022 AFC championship. His two previous postseason losses came against Tom Brady-led teams. Mahomes’ lone Super Bowl loss came against Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021. That came after Mahomes fell short to Brady’s New England Patriots in the 2019 AFC Championship. Mahomes turned the ball over twice in two of those losses but has consistently elevated his play when it matters most the majority of the time in his career. The team he’ll face next has pushed him to the brink before, though.
Mahomes was arguably not the best player on the field by the end of Super Bowl LVII in 2023. He tallied three passing touchdowns with just 182 passing yards in a 38-35 victory against the Eagles. Jalen Hurts, the opposition’s quarterback, amassed 304 passing yards and a passing touchdowns alongside three rushing scores. That wasn’t enough to come out on top.
Few teams have had the defense to generate enough stops against Mahomes-led offenses while putting up enough points to put the game out of reach. His ability to fight through adversity in the clutch has brought him to the brink of a monumental moment in NFL history. It appears like the road to 18-3 in the playoffs will be a challenge, but Mahomes has conquered plenty of those at this point in his career.
