Will One Super Bowl LIX Team Have a Crowd Advantage in New Orleans?

Examining whether Eagles or Chiefs fans will take over the Superdome on Super Bowl Sunday.

The NFL is a league where playing at your home stadium matters more than any other sport, as the noise that is created from fans can make it that much more difficult for the opposing team to make sure they are lined up correctly. Crowd noise can literally wreck an offense by itself, so having home field advantage is huge for any team in this league.

This is why the Super Bowl is played on a neutral field rather than in either teams’ home stadium, that way no one has an advantage in terms of crowd noise and a familiar field. However, that doesn’t mean that there won’t be a slight lean toward one side or the other for these games. Fans from every team and city attend this game, but generally, fans of the two teams in it mostly fill up the stadium. So, which fans travel better?

According to Chase Senior of Chatsports, one team should have that advantage over the other in Super Bowl LIX.

Admittedly, the Super Bowl can be different from this stat, which takes into account regular-season road games. As we all know, a ticket to the Super Bowl can cost over $5,000 for the cheapest seats, while a regular-season game is usually in the low hundreds. It all depends on who can afford to deal out the cash, but one thing is for sure, and that is Philadelphia is one of the most hard-core fanbases in the league.

If the Eagles do manage to take over the Superdome in New Orleans, that could mean a huge advantage for them in Super Bowl LIX. Having the crowd advantage anywhere can be huge for a team, but playing in a dome makes it somewhat overwhelming for opposing teams. The sound has nowhere to go, so it bounces off the walls and rooftop back inward, making it one insanely loud environment.

This would surely make life difficult on the Chiefs, who already had issues all season on offense. In fact, they ranked just 23rd in yards per play offensively. However, I would advise a bit of caution. You probably noticed the other team that travels well was the San Francisco 49ers. While this stat is just from the 2024 season, you have to imagine it goes back to last year as well. Who did the Chiefs face last year in the Super Bowl? The 49ers.

Clearly, San Francisco didn’t benefit enough from their traveling fans to win the game. So, even if Philly fans fill up the stadium, nothing is guaranteed. It is interesting though, and certainly should be a part of your handicap for the game, as crowd noise really can make a big impact on the final score.
