This MLB offseason is going to be quite the busy one, as we have several star players that are hitting free agency and will be open to sign with any team they choose. The biggest prize will obviously be Juan Soto, who is a -130 favorite to go back to the Yankees right now, but other players such as Alex Bregman, Blake Snell, Corbin Burnes, and Max Fried will be available to sign.
Of course, as you guessed by the title of this article, New York Mets star Pete Alonso has also entered free agency. He will be one of the most sought after bats this cycle, and his power will be a huge factor for whoever decides to pay him. Let’s take a look at the current odds board and see where the books think he ends up, specifically at DraftKings.
Pete Alonso Next Team:
Washington Nationals +450
New York Mets +500
Any Other Team +600
Seattle Mariners +700
New York Yankees +700
Boston Red Sox +800
San Francisco Giants +900
Los Angeles Angels +900
Detroit Tigers +900
Chicago Cubs +1000
San Diego Padres +1000
Pittsburgh Pirates +1100
Going off of those odds at DraftKings, it appears to be very likely that Alonso is going to either be a National or a Met once again. I usually gauge these odds by where the “any other team” option winds up on the board, and right now, that is just third on this list. That tells me that the two listed above are very likely to be his destination.
I am very interested in what the Mets are going to do this offseason. They obviously had a group, including Alonso, that made a real run at a title last year. Are they willing to let him go and sign in Washington or elsewhere? The Yankees have long been known as the big spenders in New York, but the Mets have recently become very liberal with their cash, throwing it at whoever they decide they want on their team. They had one of the most expensive payrolls in the league last season.
The Nationals are an interesting team for Alonso. They are still rebuilding from their 2019 title run, having lost a ton of those players, but it looks possible they are ready to start spending again. It is worth noting that the Nationals don’t appear to be players for any of the other superstars I mentioned earlier, while the Mets are listed on just about every single one of their odds boards. I expect that they will be focused solely on Alonso, while the Mets will be engaged in all kinds of talks this offseason.
The Mets are the favorites to land Burnes right now, and in the Soto sweepstakes, they are just behind the Yankees at +160 to sign him. I think their focus will be on throwing the kitchen sink at him to try and pry him from their rivals, while Alonso will be a backup plan. The Mets are also tied for first on the odds board for Snell, so as you can tell, they are just everywhere.
Seeing as how I expect Soto to stay with the Yankees, and he is -130 to do so, I think Alonso will wind up back with the Mets.
