Why Deebo Samuel is a Perfect Fit for the Commanders

Washington Adds a Dynamic Weapon to Help Jayden Daniels Take the Next Step

The Washington Commanders are already making moves to improve their offense ahead of the 2025 season. Washington sent a future fifth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers to bolster their receiving corps with Deebo Samuels and it’s clear that the team is in win-now mode. The Commanders surprisingly advanced to the NFC Championship last season and are looking to capitalize on their young quarterback’s rookie salary. Samuel has the tools to make an instant impact with his dynamic skill set.

“He can do a lot of things. He is a Swiss army knife for any offensive coordinator if he’s playing at his best,” Chelsa Messinger said Tuesday on BetMGM Network’s The Daily Tip. “So I think it’s a great pickup. I think it’s a great buy-low spot that they only had to give away a fifth-round pick.”

“It feels like the window is pretty much now for the Commanders,” Messenger continued. “Like, I understand that Jayden Danies is only a rookie. But it’s incredibly tough to get to the top tier of the NFL. And I don’t know. I just feel like you strike while the iron’s hot and you strike while your young quarterback doesn’t have one of those monster contracts.”

Daniels is entering year two of a four-year, $37.75 million deal while Samuel will be in the final season of a three-year, $71.55 million extension he signed with the 49ers. Samuel is owed $17.55 million in his contract year, so Washington will look to get as much as they can from him alongside star receiver Terry McLaurin.

Daniels was only second to Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix in passing yards (3,568) and passing touchdowns (25) among rookies last season en route to his Offensive Rookie of the Year victory. He completed an impressive 69% of his passes despite being an elite dual-threat option with 891 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns. Whether his playmaking can help revitalize Samuel after a down year remains to be seen, but the Commanders have added more talent in an attempt to keep up with the reigning champion Philadelphia Eagles.

The Commanders now have the 4th-shortest odds to win the NFC (+850) and 8th-shortest odds to win the Super Bowl (+1800) after adding Samuel.
