The Steelers halted their three-game losing streak by protecting their home field Sunday against Denver, winning for the first time since upsetting Buffalo in Week 1. While first-round rookie Najee Harris enjoyed a career-best game with 122 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries Sunday, one Steelers fan ruffled feathers by spreading a relative’s ashes in the end zone and stands at Heinz Field and is now being investigated by “local authorities,” according to CBS Pittsburgh.
Per state laws, it’s illegal to spread ashes in a public setting without permission of the property owner. A spokesman for the Steelers made clear fans are not permitted to spread ashes anywhere on stadium grounds. No suspects have been named as the investigation remains ongoing.

Surprisingly, this is already the second ashes-related incident the NFL has seen this season. Packers Pro Bowler Aaron Jones lost a pendant containing his father’s ashes while playing the Lions back in Week 2, though fortunately it was later recovered by a team staff member. Longtime equipment manager Gordon Batty has since sewn a pocket inside of Jones’ jersey, allowing him to safely stow the medallion while continuing to honor his late father’s memory. The fifth-year running back lost his dad, Alvin, to COVID earlier this year.
