The Phoenix Suns made two game-changing signings this offseason, bringing in Tyus Jones and Monte Morris to shore up their backcourt. After a season in which the Suns struggled with turnovers (25th in turnover rate) and lacked a true point guard, these additions are exactly what they needed.
Jones, known for his incredible assist-to-turnover ratio, will step into the starting role. His ability to control the ball is unmatched, as he’s led the league in assist-to-turnover ratio for the past six seasons. Last year’s mark of 7.35 was not just impressive—it was the best ever recorded for a player with at least 100 assists (spanning 47 years). With Jones at the helm and running the action as a floor general, the Suns will see far fewer turnovers, and that’s going to give stars like Bradley Beal, Devin Booker and Kevin Durant more opportunities to thrive. Starting center Jusuf Nurkic should also benefit.
Morris, who’s also been one of the NBA’s most reliable facilitators, will back up Jones. His calm, steady play will ensure that the Suns never miss a beat when it comes to ball control. Morris has consistently ranked among the league’s best in assist-to-turnover ratio, and his presence will allow Phoenix to maintain efficiency even when Jones is off the court. He tied with Jones for the NBA lead in the important statistic back in 2022 and finished second in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
It’s not just about limiting turnovers, though. Last season, the Suns relied heavily on Beal, Booker, and Durant to handle the ball and create plays. This took a toll on their offensive flow, despite their talent. With Jones running the point, those three can focus on doing what they do best—scoring. Expect to see more catch-and-shoot opportunities, more three-pointers, and fewer mid-range shots, which should make Phoenix’s offense more efficient and dynamic within coach Mike Budenholzer’s system.
The Suns’ decision to bring in two of the league’s most reliable veteran point guards sends a clear message—they’re serious about making a deep playoff run. After last year’s disappointing first-round exit, they needed to make changes, and these moves address one of their biggest issues.
As a result of Jones’ addition, Grayson Allen will become the team’s sixth man, joining Morris, Josh Okogie, Royce O’Neale and newcomer Mason Plumlee on the second unit.
The Suns are listed at +175 to win the Pacific Division, +1200 to win the Western Conference and +1500 to win the NBA Title as a result of these moves. Their win total ranges from 46.5 to 47.5 across the industry and they’re priced between -210 and -240 to make the playoffs.
