New York Jets running back Breece Hall expected to go up against the reigning Offensive Player of the Year, Christian McCaffrey, earlier this week on Monday Night Football in San Francisco. However, with McCaffrey a late scratch in Week 1, all eyes were solely on Hall.
The Jets struggled in their 32-19 loss to the 49ers and Hall’s stats were anything but impressive to the average viewer with just 54 yards on 16 carries. He did, however, find the endzone on a 3-yard run for the game’s first touchdown, but also lost a fumble that turned into a field goal for the Niners.
His odds to win Offensive Player of the Year took a hit moving from +1200 before Week 1 to +1500 after the loss. That said, if you take a dive deeper, Hall’s advanced stats paint an entirely different performance, which is why he’s currently BetMGM’s biggest liability to win the award with 11% of the handle backing him.
New York pulled its quarterback Aaron Rodgers late in the game once it was clear that a comeback was out of the cards. However, before that happened Hall demonstrated exceptional usage, highlighting his critical role in the Jets' offense.
According to Scott Barrett of Fantasy Points, Hall played 30 out of 31 snaps (97%), handled all 12 backfield carries (100%), and received all five backfield targets (100%) with Rodgers on the field. Hall also accounted for five of the team's 17 total targets, making up 29% of the Jets' passing game involvement.
This level of utilization was the fifth-most valuable for any running back in any single week since the start of the 2021 season, indicating that Hall is being positioned as a focal point in both the rushing and passing attack. His rushing prop for Week 2 also reflects that, set at 75.5 yards on the road against a Titans team that just held the Bears to just 84 yards on the ground.
Overall, Hall is tied with Bengals receiver Ja’Marr Chase and Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb for the fourth shortest odds to win OPOY at +1500 on BetMGM. The only players ahead of him are Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill (+500), Eagles running back Saquon Barkley (+950) and Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson (+1200). The only player with a higher ticket percentage than Hall (8.9%) is Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown with 10.1%.
