Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin is having the best start of his eight-year NFL career. This is a bit surprising, not because he isn’t talented, but because the Buccaneers brought in new offensive coordinator Liam Coen to call the shots.
Coen served as the Kentucky Wildcats offensive coordinator in 2023 and held the same position for the Los Angeles Rams in 2022. When a new coordinator joins an organization, there are often growing pains as the team looks to implement a new offense and get everyone on the same page. However, that hasn’t been the case for Godwin.
After four weeks of play, he ranks third in the league with 27 catches and sixth with 322 receiving yards. His three touchdown catches also have him tied for third, putting him on pace for 115 catches, 1,368 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also leads the NFL in receptions for first downs with 17 on the season.
If Godwin reaches these projected numbers, he will surpass his career-high in receiving yards (1,333) and touchdowns (9) set in 2019. He would also finish 11 receptions above his high of 104 catches set in 2022.
Godwin's early success has also translated to success for bettors. He’s surpassed his receiving prop in three of his first four games, topping it by 26.5 yards in Week 1, 56.5 yards in Week 2, and 3.5 yards in Week 4. They also allowed 110 yards to Rashee Rice in Week 3 and gave up an average of 210.3 passing yards per game over its last three games. With Godwin averaging a team-high in targets (34), yards per game (80.0) and yards after the catch (188), I like him to continue playing a major role in the receiving game and go over 67.5 yards on Thursday.
