The 2024 NFL season has been a roller coaster for a ton of teams, and as such, we have seen lots of odds movement so far in the market on many different futures. One of the more popular bets to make is whether a team will make the playoffs this season, and now that we have seen what these teams are after five games, a more clear picture is painted for many franchises. However, for some, we still have lots of questions.
The Washington Commanders started as one of the biggest longshots to make the playoffs, and no one expected them to be any good this season. Welp, they were wrong. After five weeks, Washington is 4-1 and coming off of a dominating 34-13 win over the Cleveland Browns. Much of their success has been due to the extraordinary play of rookie QB Jayden Daniels, who has been on fire to start his career with four passing touchdowns and four rushing touchdowns, as well as a 77% completion percentage.
As a result of their most recent win, the Commanders are now favored to make the playoffs over at BetMGM. They moved from +130 to -150 now to get into the postseason over the last week.
Another team that has been pretty surprising is the Pittsburgh Steelers, who got off to a phenomenal 3-0 start, but have since fallen back to Earth a bit with two straight losses. QB Justin Fields got them off to that good start, but now there are questions swirling about whether or not they will give veteran Russell Wilson a shot at the starting job.
Still, even with the recent losses and QB controversy, BetMGM thinks the Steelers will be in the postseason as it sits right now. Their odds moved from +100 to -120 after their defeat to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. A lot of this has to do with the fact that some other teams in the AFC also took losses, which helped them out.
Lastly, the Green Bay Packers had to go without their starting QB for a few weeks, but managed to win both games where Jordan Love didn’t start. They are also sitting at 3-2 right now after their most recent win against the Los Angeles Rams, and sportsbooks took notice of it as well.
After that win, BetMGM moved them from +120 to -105 to make the playoffs, so they are now slightly favored to get in. They are playing in one of the most difficult divisions in the league so far, where every team has a winning record, but clearly the books like them in what is overall a weak NFC.
It will be interesting to keep an eye on this market as the season goes along, and also seeing if we can grab some value on a team to make the postseason.
