After another dominant performance in Week 7, Ashton Jeanty continues to run away as the favorite to win this year’s Heisman Trophy. With 31 carries for 217 yards and a touchdown in Boise State’s 28-7 win over Hawaii, Jeanty’s odds dropped to +150 at BetMGM. He is receiving 11.1% of the handle, which sits only behind Travis Hunter who’s earning 31.9% of the handle.
If Jeanty continues to play like this each week, he deserves to win the award. The Broncos running back is putting up numbers that we haven’t seen in a very long time and is on pace to shatter Derrick Henry’s SEC record with 2,219 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns, which earned him the Heisman in 2009.
The one knock against Jeanty is that he plays in the Mountain West and no player within that conference has ever won the award. In 2004, Utah quarterback Alex Smith came close, earning an invite to New York, but USC quarterback Matt Leinart took home the hardware.
Hunter’s Heisman odds took a hit after Colorado’s loss to Kansas State on Saturday, going from +300 after Week 6 to +800 after Week 7. While he still owns the third-shortest odds, another loss for the Buffalos and Hunter could kiss his Heisman hopes goodbye.
With a huge win over Ohio State, Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel went from +1400 to +350. Despite being the favorite coming into the season, he’s only receiving 4.4% of the tickets and 5.4% of the handle. However, if he continues to play like he did against the Buckeyes, I’d imagine we’ll see more money come in on him.
Gabriel threw for 341 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday, adding 32 yards on the ground, including the game-winning score to give the Ducks the 32-31 win. His 77% completion percentage heading into Week 7 was the best mark in the country and he finished the night with a 95.9 QBR against the best total defense in FBS.
If you’re looking for a value play, Georgia quarterback Carson Beck is your guy. Despite having lost to Alabama earlier this year, the Bulldogs schedule gives Beck an opportunity to get back in the race. His odds went from +2500 after the loss, to +1400 after Georgia’s Week 7 win over Mississippi State.
With Texas on deck and meetings with Ole Miss and Tennessee in the coming weeks, Beck has a chance to prove why he’s worthy of the Heisman. Georgia will have to run the table if he has any chance of winning, but beating three top-25 teams in the span of four weeks, with two of those matchups on the road, would certainly raise some eyebrows among voters. If you’re confident the Bulldogs can pull off the wins, now is the time to jump in on Beck because his odds will drastically shrink with a win in Austin this weekend.
