Flyers embracing underdog status during rebuild: 'Hungry dogs skate faster'

The Flyers are a bit of an afterthought in Philadelphia with the Phillies in the NLCS, the Eagles coming off a Super Bowl appearance, and the drama around the Sixers. However, this Flyers team has the potential to be a fun team to watch and a hard team to play against.

Offseason acquisition Garnet Hathaway joined Ashlyn Sullivan on Audacy’s new original podcast “South Philly Sauce” and explained what it’s been like to play in Philadelphia and how they’re adopting the “hungry dogs skate faster” mantra.

“It’s a younger team that has that energy but also that work ethic that when guys are clicking you’re going to have a chance to win every night,” Hathaway said (5:33 in player above). “We may be saying we’re in a rebuild or in the middle of one, but if you get everyone committed to putting that effort in and the skill that we have here, and the character guys as well, you add all that together, you’re going to be successful.”

The Flyers haven’t made the playoffs since the shortened 2019-20 season. They’ve improved over the past two seasons, but their main goal is to build a winning culture for when their top prospects are ready to go.

The Orange and Black are going to be underdogs quite a bit this season and the team is embracing it.

“I watched the ‘Kelce’ documentary, it’s amazing,” Hathaway continued. “It’s hungry dogs run faster. And that is so true. I hope it catches on. (Laughton) the other day was like ‘Hungry dogs skate faster’ and I laughed but it fits. I think that’s what we’re trying to buy into. It’s that work ethic. It’s that city behind us.”

The Flyers are off to a fast start with wins in two of their first three games. They host Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night.
