Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty has become the talk of the college football world after putting up eye-popping numbers through the first two weeks of the 2024 season. In Week 1, Jeanty shredded Georgia Southern’s defense, rushing for 267 yards and six touchdowns on just 20 carries, leading the Broncos to a 56-45 victory. He followed that performance with another remarkable outing against No. 7 Oregon, rushing for 192 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries in a narrow 37-34 loss.
Jeanty's two-game totals are staggering: 45 carries for 459 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging an incredible 10.2 yards per carry. Those nine touchdowns not only lead the nation but also outpace entire teams like Penn State, Utah, and Oregon. His explosive start has quickly elevated him into the Heisman Trophy conversation.
As of Week 2, Jeanty is on pace to challenge legendary numbers set by Barry Sanders in 1988, when Sanders set the all-time record for 37 rushing touchdowns and 2,628 rushing yards. If Jeanty maintains his current pace, he could finish a 12-game season with 2,754 rushing yards and 54 touchdowns, numbers that would shatter Sanders’ historic marks. With a favorable schedule ahead that includes matchups against Portland State, Washington State, and Utah State, Boise State has a legitimate chance to win out, which could further bolster Jeanty’s Heisman chances.
While Heisman odds after Week 2 haven't been released, Jeanty's name is sure to be near the top of the list heading into Week 3. If he continues to dominate, he could become the first Boise State player to take home the prestigious award.
