A rematch of last year’s College Football Championship takes place this weekend when the #10 Michigan Wolverines invade Washington to take on the Huskies. However, these teams both look entirely different than they did last year when they met for the highest stakes imaginable. Both teams have undergone substantial changes over the past offseason, but even so, we should be in for a fantastic game this weekend between the two programs again.
Michigan may be the 10th ranked team in the country, but whether or not they have played like that this season is another story entirely. The Wolverines are coming off of a close victory over unranked Minnesota, and they once again failed to cover the spread. They did beat USC at home in the Big Ten opener, but they came close to losing that game as well. Pair that with a couple of close wins against inferior competition and a blowout loss to Texas, I am not sure that Michigan deserves its ranking.
This is a team that does not have J.J. McCarthy at QB anymore, nor do they have head coach Jim Harbaugh guiding them to the playoffs. Instead, they Sherrone Moore running the show, who is quite the downgrade to this point from Harbaugh. The team has already benched QB Davis Warren, who they started the year with, for Alex Orji. The latter has passed for a total 118 yards in two starts, which is terrible. However, he also hasn’t been a turnover machine, as opposed to Warren who had six interceptions in three starts.
Washington lost their starting QB as well after last season, with Michael Penix Jr. riding the pine behind Kirk Cousins in Atlanta now. Will Rogers has come in and taken the reins, and so far, the results have been pretty good. He’s thrown for 1,354 yards and 10 touchdowns, and hasn’t thrown a single interception so far. However, the Wolverine defense will be the best one he has faced this season, so he could be in for an entirely different challenge here.
The Huskies also lost their head coach, but Kalen DeBoer went to Alabama instead of the NFL. As we can see from what he is doing with the Crimson Tide, he is a brilliant offensive mind, and replacing him is nearly impossible. Washington is just 3-2 to start the season, which already effectively eliminates them from CFP contention. They are not the team we saw last year, but when you lose your superstar QB, outstanding head coach, and No. 1 WR in Rome Odunze, that was bound to happen.
The Wolverines are coming off of a win, while Washington took a loss to Rutgers in their last game. Michigan is also a top 10 ranked team, while the Huskies are unranked in this contest. Yet, Washington is a -2.5 favorite in the game at home.
I don’t have the betting splits for this game yet, but I would be shocked if the public wasn’t hammering Michigan. Therefore, I am leaning towards betting Washington in this game. There is a reason they are an unranked favorite here, and based on what I am seeing early, they will probably win this game.
