Andy Reid is pushing back against LeSean McCoy’s criticism of Eric Bieniemy.

The Kansas City Chiefs head coach dismissed McCoy’s theory that Bieniemy is unable to get an NFL head coaching job because he is cannot relate to players, but rather defended the offensive coordinator for being honest with players, regardless of what they’ve done in the past.

“Sometimes it’s hard on a veteran player,” Reid said, per ProFootballTalk. “Maybe their performance level isn’t what is used to be, and it’s hard to take sometimes. But [Bieniemy is] going to push you to try to maximize what you’ve got. That’s one of his strengths…He’ll come in and shoot you straight. Sometimes you want to hear it. Sometimes you don’t.”

Reid had drafted McCoy in 2009 while head coach of the Eagles and coached him the first four seasons of his career before they reunited in 2019 with Bieniemy as the offensive coordinator of the Chiefs.

The Chiefs head coach believed McCoy struggled to accept he was not the same player at 31 years old that he was when he previously played for Reid.

“I’m a big LeSean fan,” Reid said. “In my eyes, he’s a future hall of Fame running back. If you look at it statistically, he’s tremendous. But he wasn’t the youngest pup in the kennel here. He was on the back side and sometimes that’s hard to take.”
