Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan isn’t pulling any punches when it comes to how he feels about former head coach Urban Meyer.
Khan spoke to USA Today Sports about Meyer’s failed NFL stint last season, which was marred in controversy and poor performance on the field.
“When you lose the respect, the trust and an issue of truthfulness, how can you work with someone like that?” Khan said. “It’s not possible.”
Khan did not expand on what, exactly, it was the Meyer was untruthful about but there were a handful of incidents and missteps in his short time as head coach, including the video of him with a young woman dancing on him at a bar and reports that he called his assistants “losers” and got into a heated dispute with a player.
The final nail in Meyer’s NFL coffin came when former kicker Josh Lambo said Meyer kicked him in practice during preseason.
“It was not about wins and losses,” Khan said. “I think when you know someone is not truthful, how can you be around someone, OK?
“We had Doug Marrone here four years. We had Gus Bradley here four years. I have nothing but the utmost respect and friendship with them. That’s why they got the time, because it wasn’t a matter about respect or truth. It was a matter of wins and losses over four years. This is much bigger than that.”
Khan, following the unflattering video of Meyer, said that the head coach would have to regain his trust and after two months that clearly did not happen, although at times it felt Khan was giving Meyer a long leash.
Meyer was fired before the completion of the season with a 2-11 record.
The Jaguars and Meyer have not yet agreed on a buyout with Jacksonville trying to avoid paying Meyer the remainder of his five-year deal citing he was fired with cause.
