John Lynch, like the rest of the NFL, is in Indianapolis for this week’s NFL Combine. Addressing the media Wednesday, the 49ers GM had only good things to say about Mike McDaniel, who left San Francisco this offseason to become the Dolphins’ head coach. Unbeknownst to Lynch, the former Niners offensive coordinator was in the audience, and seemed to be loving every second of it.
McDaniel also spoke to the media Wednesday, thanking the 49ers—and head coach Kyle Shanahan, in particular—for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
San Francisco’s coaching staff will look markedly different next season with McDaniel recruiting both Jon Embree (tight ends) and Wes Welker (wide receivers) to Miami. The 49ers are also expected to move on from starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who many including ESPN’s Adam Schefter believe will be traded at some point this month.

McDaniel was hired to replace Brian Flores (now a senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach for Pittsburgh), who filed a lawsuit against the NFL alleging racial discrimination and unfair hiring practices last month. Prior to joining the Dolphins, McDaniel had served as an assistant in San Francisco, Atlanta, Cleveland, Washington, Houston and Denver, collaborating with Shanahan at most of those stops.
