AT&T, a presenting sponsor of this year’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, debuted a new commercial starring Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford during Thursday’s opening round of March Madness. Stafford, who cemented his legacy by leading a late touchdown drive in last month’s Super Bowl victory over Cincinnati, made the most of his 20 seconds of screen time, cleverly referencing his trade to Los Angeles following a 12-year stint in Detroit, where he finished as the Lions’ all-time leader in career touchdowns (282) and passing yards (45,109).

Even after his departure last offseason, Lions fans have continued to root for Stafford, showing their loyalty by printing “Detroit Rams” shirts ahead of Super Bowl LVI. Stafford, who had never won a playoff game, let alone a Super Bowl, prior to joining the Rams, couldn’t be happier with how it all played out, describing the move to Los Angeles as “life-changing.”

While a deal has yet to be finalized, Stafford and the Rams are reportedly nearing an extension worth up to $45 million annually. The NFL hasn’t had a repeat champion since the Patriots in 2003-04, though the Rams should be well-equipped to run it back in 2022, particularly after luring Pro Bowl receiver Allen Robinson in free agency.
