Some Jaguars players 'aren't thrilled' with new head coach Urban Meyer

Jacksonville Jaguars first-year head coach Urban Meyer, who's received a considerable amount of criticism for his college-like methods this summer, has remained reluctant to name highly-touted rookie Trevor Lawrence his starting quarterback.

And while this is standard coachspeak -- Lawrence was selected first overall in this year's draft, remember -- some Jaguars players have been frustrated with Meyer's direction, according to CBS Sports NFL columnist Pete Prisco.

"He's got to change a few things. He brought a bunch of college-like things to the program, which I don't necessarily agree with," Prisco told The DA Show on Tuesday. "And I've heard some of the players aren't thrilled with him either, including having a microphone on the field -- one of his assistants on the field during practice with a boom mic, telling everybody to hydrate and hustle and get to the next period.

"So, obviously he's a work in progress. He's been a good football coach everywhere he's been. It's a lot different when you recruit guys to your school and have a bunch of the top players than it is trying to build something. So, it's going to be a challenge. I'm not giving up on what he can do in his first two games. I don't think that's fair to him or the quarterback. But they're not off to a good start."

Through two preseason games, Jacksonville has scored 34 combined points. But of those 34 points, 31 came during the fourth quarters, which means that the Jaguars' first-string offense has scored a measly three points in the first three quarters of both games. Meyer admitted to reporters on Monday night that the starting offensive unit is "struggling to get into some rhythm."

Perhaps the Jaguars can find solace in the fact that Lawrence is still their future. The Clemson product, wearing the No. 16, has completed 20 of 32 passes for 184 yards with no touchdowns, no interceptions, and one fumble in the team's pair of preseason losses.

Last week, Jacksonville cut veteran quarterback-turned-tight-end Tim Tebow, who played for Meyer and won a pair of national titles with the Florida Gators during the late 2000s. Meyer's experiment with Tebow was widely criticized by NFL analysts and former players.

The Jaguars will open the 2021 regular season on the road against the Houston Texans on Sept. 12. According to the William Hill Sportsbook, Jacksonville currently has the third-best odds (+800) to win the AFC South.
