If Aaron Rodgers wanted to go to the Denver Broncos, it sounds like they would’ve had him.
He didn’t though, electing to stay with the Green Bay Packers. And that appears to have been the impetus for the Broncos’ pursuit of Russell Wilson.
Just a couple hours after the Rodgers news came down Tuesday, the Broncos traded for the longtime Seattle Seahawks quarterback. He’s no slouch, but Rodgers more recently has been playing at a higher level.
And Broncos insider Benjamin Allbright shed some light on how the Broncos pivoted from Rodgers to Wilson during an appearance on 92.9 The Game in Atlanta.
"(The Broncos) knew this was on the radar since January. It was Plan B behind Aaron Rodgers the entire time," Allbright told "Dukes and Bell." "Aaron Rodgers was Plan A, make no mistake, but thus team had been prepping for this. They had gotten a tip about a little over a week ago that Aaron Rodgers was going to go back to Green Bay, he’d already been telling teammates about that, so they pivoted to Russell Wilson. Seattle leaked the offer from Washington this past week to try to get Denver to up the offer to try to up the offer, Denver stayed put and Denver called Seattle today to pull the trigger on the final deal."
You could argue Denver was a quarterback away from becoming a legitimate Super Bowl contender, and Wilson certainly is a good way to address that need – even if they fell short on Rodgers.
