The Jets are coming off a tough loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 4, moving their record to just 2-2 on the season. Not only was New York at home and facing a rookie quarterback with Bo Nix leading the charge for Denver, but their defense held him to just 60 passing yards and 2.4 yards per pass. If your defense is putting up that type of performance, your offense needs to do its part to help win the game.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw for 225 yards, but the Jets’ run game couldn’t get going, finishing with just 64 yards on the ground. One of the biggest issues was the lack of production from RB1 Breece Hall. The third-year player recorded just four rushing yards on 10 carries for 0.4 yards per carry. Those numbers are inexcusable even with rookie running back Braelon Allen playing a larger role than anticipated prior to the start of the season. Allen has 26 carries for 122 yards over his last three games while Hall has 40 carries for 120 yards over that same span.
Hall's lack of production in Week 4 caused a major shift in his odds in the Offensive Player of the Year market. He went from +1400 before Week 4 to +2500 after. Hall is still garnering 7.6% of the tickets, the second-most among all players, and 8.3% of the handle, the third-most.
Garrett Wilson is another Jets player who has gotten off to a slow start and found his odds lengthen as a result. Wilson went into Week 4 with +4000 odds to win OPOY and now sits at +6600. Only 3.3% of the tickets and 3.5% of the handle is backing him to take home the award.
Not only was Wilson quiet in New York’s loss to the Broncos, finishing with just five catches for 41 yards, but he has struggled all season. Through four games, the Jets WR1 has just 191 total receiving yards and has yet to top 60 in a single game. At this time last season, Wilson had 225 receiving yards and that was with Zach Wilson throwing him the ball, not a Hall of Fame quarterback.
In a recent interview, the Jets receiver talked about the lack of creativity in the offense, saying the team doesn’t “mix it up.” Wilson is clearly frustrated but unfortunately for him, the path forward doesn’t get much easier with an upcoming meeting against the Vikings defense in London.
While the odds for Offensive Player of the Year for both Hall and Wilson may seem appealing, I'm hesitant to back either. If forced to choose, I'd lean towards Hall. The Jets have already faced three of the top 12 run defenses this season, but their upcoming schedule includes five games against the league’s bottom-five run defenses. Hall is also more involved than Allen as a pass-catcher out of the backfield, boosting his overall value. Additionally, rumors are swirling about Davante Adams being traded to the Jets. With his established chemistry with Rodgers from their time in Green Bay, Adams would become Rodgers’ go-to target, potentially diminishing Wilson’s opportunities.
