In one of only two matchups between Top 25 ranked teams in Week 2, the Texas Longhorns will be on the road in the Big House to take on the defending champion Michigan Wolverines. This will be a huge contest with season-altering stakes for both teams, so both schools will be giving their best effort to win this game.
Texas is coming off a complete blowout of Colorado State last week, ripping them to shreds and shutting them out in a 52-0 victory. Needless to say, the Rams certainly aren’t on the same level as the Longhorns, so it wasn’t shocking at all to see them win by so much.
The same can’t be said for Michigan, who also faced an unranked team that wasn’t on their talent level in Fresno State. While the final score indicates a blowout 30-10 win, it was much closer than that for a majority of the contest. It was 10-3 Wolverines at halftime, and 13-3 going into the fourth quarter. It wasn’t until then that they took over the game.
As a result, the home team defending national champion Wolverines find themselves as 7.5 point underdogs. If they want to compete in this game with the Longhorns, they are going to need to get star RB Donovan Edwards going.
After half of their roster got turned over from last year, including starting QB J.J. McCarthy, Michigan will have to rely on the veterans they do have in order to win games this year. Edwards is one of them, and he really struggled against Fresno’s defense on Saturday.
Edwards rushed for just 27 yards on 11 carries, and didn’t get into the endzone either. In fact, fellow RB Kalel Mullings got four more attempts than he did. I don’t expect that to continue to be the case, because they will need him in this game to produce like he is capable of. The Week 1 struggles were a continuation of the inefficiency he showed last year, averaging just 3.5 yards per carry for 382 yards behind an elite offensive line. In 2022, he was electric, averaging 7.5 yards per carry for 872 yards on the ground.
The public seems to be laying the points with Texas, which is not shocking at all. The impression is that Michigan isn’t half of what the team was last year. However, I am leaning heavily into betting on the Wolverines here at +7.5.
As per usual, I will be watching where the money goes before kickoff to make a wager. I feel like it is very likely I will be on Michigan.
