For the first time in NFL history, two of the league's most storied franchises, the Green Bay Packers and the Philadelphia Eagles, will kick off their 2024 season on international soil. The two squads will meet on Friday night for a Week 1 matchup in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The Eagles opened as -1.5 favorites earlier in the summer, but with money coming in on Philadelphia, that line has been pushed to -3. The total has been holding steady where it opened at 48.5. For those looking to back the Packers, their underdog status might be a welcomed sign because Green Bay is 7-3 against the spread (ATS) in its last 10 games as underdogs.
The Packers were underdogs in their first seven games of the 2023-24 season, going 3-4 ATS in that span. After a slow start, they soared in the second half of the year before losing in the NFC Divisional round to the 49ers, 24-21. Despite the disappointing end to the season, Green Bay covered as +10.5 underdogs in that game after beating the Cowboys outright as +7 underdogs in the NFC Wildcard.
Over their final 10 games of the season, the Packers were underdogs in six of those games. Not only did they cover in all six, but they won five of them outright with their only straight up loss coming against San Francisco to end the season.
According to BetQL, there are a few other trends that favor Green Bay as an underdog. Head coach Matt Lafleur is 15-5 ATS in the first month of the season while coaching the Packers and is 22-10 ATS throughout his entire tenure in Green Bay.
Not only that, but under Matt LaFleur, the Packers have gone 13-4 ATS in September. With all of this in mind, you should consider backing Green Bay in Brazil.
