5.5 games back of the Braves in the NL East, the Nationals' three-game series against Atlanta this week is arguably the biggest of their season thus far.

And as of now, the Nats will likely be without ace Max Scherzer.
Scherzer woke up Friday morning with a mild strain of the rhomboid muscle in his upper back and was shut down for the next two days. He received a stem cell injection and was supposed to throw on Sunday, but that did not happen.

Scherzer did not throw a bullpen today. Martinez says he’s “very doubtful” to make his start Tuesday against the Braves

Nats manager Dave Martinez told reporters after Sunday's 11-4 win over the Dodgers he's "very doubtful" Scherzer makes scheduled start Tuesday against the Braves.

Scherzer was placed on the 10-day injured list earlier in July with a back injury later identified as scapulothoracic bursitis, and it appears the back issues are still lingering.
In other injury news, first baseman Matt Adams left Sunday's win after he was hit by a pitch on his right foot. Martinez said x-rays came back inconclusive because there was too much swelling, Adams scheduled to get the injury looked at again Monday. With Ryan Zimmerman already on the IL due to plantar fasciitis, the Nats are down to Howie Kendrick at first base.

The trade deadline is two days away.
