Danny: Latest conference realignment is 'last straw' for his college football fandom

College football underwent yet another massive conference realignment over the weekend, with the Pac-12 falling all the way down to just four schools with Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah, being the latest schools from the now rubble of a conference to bolt for greener (wealthier) pastures.

For Danny, that massive realignment marked the end of his college football fandom, simply because college football is no longer what it has long claimed to be.

“It wasn’t just the Pac-12 that went away. My interest in college football,” Danny said. “That was the last straw.

“I don’t care about any of those schools, but just the nature now of these flying conferences and what college sports was supposed to be at one point. I’ve cast off all illusions, and I understand a lot of people are happy that players are benefitting off the NIL, and that’s all great. But this level, whatever this is, this corporate nonsense where a middle American conference like the Big Ten is on the east and west coast, it’s just not a conference anymore. It needs to form its own thing.”

Rivalries have deteriorated, travel has greatly increased, and conferences based on region have seen their reach extend to dizzying lengths. A longstanding conference was decimated this past weekend, sending college football to a point where it has become too far gone for Danny.

“College football needs to break away and have its own rules and really just be an NFL farm system, and stop pretending it’s something else,” Danny said. “That’s the last straw for me.”
