You know that if high school football is on the radar right now, something WILD is going on – and that’s exactly what we have in Fairfax County.

If you haven’t heard or seen, the gist of the story is that Hayfield High School’s team was deemed ineligible for the playoffs, and then reinstated, all around a controversy that new head coach Daryl Overton, who came from Freedom HS in Woodbridge after winning back-to-back state titles, illegally recruited more than a dozen players from his old school and another half-dozen from private schools to come join the program.

Fairfax County Public Schools did an investigation in the summer and found no wrongdoing, but the VHSL, which also approved eligibility in August, apparently changed their mind after Hayfield went 9-1 this year – their only loss to a private school in Maryland – and scored 48 or more points in every game but that 55-30 loss to Riverdale Baptist.
