A little cross-NFC East talk today on the Junkies – Bob Papa, the play-by-play voice of the Giants on sibling station WFAN in NYC, came on to talk Big Blue with the Junks…but also had to weigh in on a DC division rival in another sport, this time the Mets, deciding to dismantle their super-team!
"They went for it, but they got these stud pitchers past their prime and now they're paying the price for it. It's like right out of the playbook of the Yankees of the early 1990s," Papa said. "But I'll give them credit: they didn't keep trying to convince themselves and the fans that this was the way to go, and they cut bait; you start over, get the prospects, and move forward, as opposed to saying you're right when the results are wrong. And watch, both guys will be great for their new teams."
As for the Giants, well, they're running it back this season with pretty much the same crew as 2022, when they made the playoffs, although they've added Darren Waller and a few other depth pieces, but it seems that the vibes are good yet realistic about Big Blue's offense.
"Is it more than a coincidence that Josh Allen's turnovers went way up and Daniel Jones' went way down last year when Brian Daboll moved?" Papa asked. "This year, Giants fans are extremely optimistic, although they're realistic in one regard: I haven't heard one fan, as optimistic as they are and exciting as their additions are, crow that they're going to win the division.
They're realistic enough to know Philadelphia is a better team, at least on paper, so they're thinking Wild Card – and if the chips fall the right way, maybe something more."
The Giants were 1-0-1 against the Commanders last year, and although Papa thinks Washington is 'a pretty stacked team,' he puts Big Blue still ahead for one very big reason.
"The only reason I'd put the Giants ahead is because they have a better, proven NFL QB. Despite what you may or may not think of Daniel Jones, he has a resume, and was a key factor in the Giants getting to the playoffs and winning a game," Papa said. "Washington's roster is phenomenal - you look at the pieces they have, and I think they're pretty stacked - and I think Terry McLaurin is one of the most underrated wide receivers in the NFL because of the cloud around the Commanders. But, I put the Giants ahead just because of the quarterback."
Take a listen as Papa goes in-depth on Daniel Jones and the Giants to give Commanders fans some insight as to what's going on a few hours up I-95 in East Rutherford!
