Regional convenience store chains are part of the fabric of the Mid-Atlantic area – whether it’s Wawa, Sheetz, or Royal Farms in the DMV, or even way up the line to Stewart’s Shops up in EB’s adopted neck of the woods in upstate New York, everyone has a love for their own local, and road trips often help
Cakes, for instance, likes to road trip from the DMV to South Carolina (Kiawah or Myrtle Beach) for various reasons, so he’s an aficionado of a lot of locals up and down the East Coast…and there is one he CANNOT stand: Buc-ee’s, which has expanded out of the heart of Texas and all across the Southeast.
“Think of a Sheetz, and it takes a massive steroid injection where they balloon up to the size of a Wal-Mart with 100 gas pumps,” Cakes described during a discussion bout road trips and families. “I made the mistake last year while driving to South Carolina; you start seeing signs like South of the Border, 100 miles away, so I said to my wife, we should stop at Buc-ee’s.
It’s like right off 95.”
Back in 2019, Food & Wine ranked Buc-ee’s as the No. 1 Convenience Store food, beating out Wawa, Stewart’s, Sheetz, and Lowcountry staple Parker’s – but sorry, Johnny Auville doesn’t care about your Beaver Nuggets, 412 types of jerky, or stable of bathrooms you can eat that jerky off the floor of…he’d rather starve than deal with
“We pull in, and the place is brand new – and I’ve NEVER, in my life, seen a scene like I did there. Every gas pump was full, every parking spot was full…this is a shiny new toy and I had to explore it,” Cakes said. “So we find a parking space and walk in, and it was like pandemonium – like the running of the bulls in a convenience store. I’ve never seen so many people, I had to get out of there. I’d never been in a crowd like that…and then a Junks listener yells at me “Cakes! What’s up!” and I had to leave. I made the mistake of stopping at a brand new Buc-ee’s!”
Maybe stopping at a brand new location just after opening means he should give them another chance, and even Cakes might understand that.
“My advice to you: try to go to a Buc-ee’s that’s been open for more than 10 minutes,” Cakes said. “I just couldn’t handle that from a sensory perspective. I think everyone who drove by that Buc-ee’s that Saturday morning stopped there.”
Bish agreed that he also couldn’t handle that kind of atmosphere, either, so perhaps you can look for Johnny or Jason at your local lowly-patronized establishment...or somewhere they sell actually Johnny Cakes?
