Through Sunday, Caitlin Clark was tops among WNBA rookies in points, assists, and three-pointers made per game, while Angel Reese is the leader in rebounds (offensive, defensive, and total) and steals and has a record 13-consecutive double-doubles – and the two are each others’ runner-up in several of those categories.
It’s a two-woman race for WNBA Rookie of the Year right now, and what could’ve been because we could’ve had one of the candidates.
“Here's what I think about it when I see that Angel Reese has a 13-game double-double streak: I know it enrages Drab that the Mystics took Aaliyah Edwards over her,” Cakes laughed.
Clark recently became the first-ever rookie in WNBA history to record a triple-double, so there’s also that, and Bish noted how she has been shooting better, and it’s a cool story, but…yeah, the Junks just can’t get into it all.
“For me, it's to the point where if Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese are facing off against each other, that will be on my radar, but if the Connecticut Sun are playing the New York Liberty, it’s just not something I would ever think about tuning into,” Cakes said.
“I'm not watching full games, I'll watch some highlights or I'll watch bits and pieces of it depending on what else is on, but I’m intrigued if those two are playing each other, and to see what numbers Clark's putting up each night,” Bish said.
“The storyline is greater than the play,” JP replied. “I've come around to Drab’s bit, and he mentioned this during March Madness when Caitlin Clark was the big story: they miss so many layups, so many bunnies. There's not much on sports-wise right now, and over the weekend, if I was free and I was home, I found myself watching more Euro and Copa America (soccer) than WNBA.”
We’re in the lull between the end of the NBA/NHL seasons and beginning of NFL training camp where it’s just MLB among the major men’s sports, so Cakes had a little guide if the latter isn’t your cup of tea.
“James Wood and the Nats, watching him develop is more important, and the WSOP in Vegas is on – and I’m a poker nerd, but I would watch that over any WNBA offering,” Cakes said. “And at the end of the week, it’s Wiz summer league; I need to see how my man Sarr looks in a Wiz uniform.”
“I know you don't care about golf, and I will watch golf 100 times out of 100 over anything,” Bish said. “And Wimbledon is going on right now, so I’ll watch all that, but I’ll check the boxes.”
“I'm with Cakes, I pretty much only check it out if it's Caitlin Clark or Angel Reese; if they play together, it's a storyline, and then when I watch it, I'm like, what am I doing?” JP chimed in. “I mean, the storyline serves the league, they’re kind of trying to make it a Magic-Bird thing, and it’ll be a close Rookie of the Year race – we’re all kind of checking it out, so it’s had that impact, but I’ve never been a WNBA fan.”
