Some surprising news out of Commanders camp Tuesday morning: the team placed DB Ahkello Witherspoon on the reserve/retired list, and signed former Redskins/WFT DB Fabian Moreau to replace him.
Witherspoon, 31, signed with the Commanders this spring after three seasons with the Rams and seemed excited to be in DC according to the Audacy team at camp daily, but per ESPN, he informed the Commanders Tuesday morning f his plans to walk away from the game.
The corner had two stints on IR last year in Los Angeles due to a broken scapula, but appeared healthy heading into minicamps and OTAs, and the first week or so veterans were in camp.
Instead, he is now on the reserve list and his spot goes to Moreau, who was a third-round pick in 2017 and played 60 games over four seasons in Washington. He has also spent time with the Falcons, Giants, Broncos and Vikings, and has 322 tackles, seven interceptions, and 45 passes defensed in 122 career games.
“I’m happy and blessed to be back here,” Moreau told Chris Russell after practice on Tuesday. “I still remember everything, it looks a lot different from the last time, but it’s a blessing.”
Moreau spent the last two seasons with new defensive coordinator Dorante Jones in Minnesota, and thinks that the Commanders got a good one with their new DC.
“His scheme is very diverse, and gets everybody involved; it keeps offenses guessing, and gives us all the opportunity to make plays and showcase our talent,” Moreau told Russell. “He’s a hell of a teacher, a hell of a coach, and a hell of a person.”
