Nationals slugger Kyle Schwarber has been named National League Player of the Week after seven straight days of absolutely raking at the dish.
Schwarber led the NL with six homers and tied for the lead with 11 RBI over the past week, also tying a Major League record with five home runs in a two-game span between Saturday and Sunday against the Mets. He is the second player in Major League history to hit five homers in two consecutive games from the leadoff spot (Mookie Betts, 2016).
On Sunday, Schwarber became the sixth player in Nationals history to hit three home runs in a single game.
On the week, Schwarber slashed .385/.414/1.077 with a 1.491 OPS in seven games, hitting safely in six of them.
Schwarber now ranks third in the NL with 18 homers, eighth in slugging percentage (.518) and 12th in OPS (.843). It's the first Player of the Week Award of Schwarber's seven-year MLB career and the first award claimed by a Nationals player since Anthony Rendon won Player of the Month in Aug. 2019.
Schwarber has homered nine times in nine days (10 games), dating back to Saturday, June 12 (Washington's doubleheader against the Giants). In that span, Schwarber's batting average has jumped 23 points — from .218 to .241 — and he boasts a 1.511 OPS with 16 RBI.
