While the Washington Nationals' play on the field has been fantastic and flying under the radar, the club made headlines this week off the field when they announced they had reached an agreement with manager Dave Martinez on a two-year contract extension.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo, the subject of reported contract talks on an extension himself, dodged questions about his own status but revealed why the manager deserved the multi-year extension on Wednesday during his weekly appearance with 106.7 The Fan's The Sports Junkies, which is presented exclusively by our partners at MainStreet Bank — Cheer Local. When asked if he was next, Rizzo said, "Well, I'll put it this way, I'm Davey's boss, my job is to take care of Davey and to take care of the players in the clubhouse and I've done my job.

"It was important for me to have ownership sign off on this multi-year contract. It was important for me to have Davey solidified in that clubhouse as a guy who was gonna be around and see this rebuild go through, so that was a success. Job well done, Mike, so I appreciate that," Rizzo said with a slight tinge of self-depreciation in praising himself.

"Davey's been terrific," the GM continued. "He's earned it, he deserves it, there can't be another guy to see this through. The guy went from a World Series champ to rebuilder and hopefully comes out of it the other end as World Series champ again."

Martinez, in his sixth season with Washington, since he was hired after the 2017 campaign, has gone 379-455 (.454) in the regular season, a record marred by three-straight losing seasons following the 2019 World Series win and headed for a fourth as the Nats currently stand at 58-68.
