Can confirm the Nats and Hellickson have agreed to a Major League deal. @JonHeyman says it will pay him $1.3 million with the potential for $4 million in incentives
— Jamal Collier (@JamalCollier) February 6, 2019Hellickson went 5-3 with a 3.45 ERA in 19 starts for the Nats in 2018. The 31-year old gives the Nats another veteran arm at the back end of their rotation after signing Anibal Sanchez earlier in the offseason.
It appears Washington's starting rotation is now set, with Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and the newly acquired Patrick Corbin at the top, while Sanchez and Hellickson serve as the fourth and fifth starters, respectively.
Hellickson (who was effective when healthy and used strategically last year) gives the Nats an experienced No. 5 starter and allows them to keep Joe Ross and Erick Fedde as much-needed insurance if/when other starters go down.
