BMitch & Finlay: Will James Smith-Williams and Casey Toohill match Chase Young and Montez Sweat's production?

Chase Young and Montez Sweat both have nine games left, as neither the Niners nor Bears have had their bye yet, and BMitch & Finlay put a little wager together on which one will have more sacks the rest of the year.

And it was almost unanimous: Chase Young was the choice of Jeff, Landfill, and Brian.

“Based off of me talking to somebody from Chicago, Montez is the guy. He’s gonna get the double teams, so I would go with Chase,” BMitch said.

JP then asked whether either of Casey Toohill or James Smith-Williams would out-produce their predecessors, and brought up the numbers that show Toohill was close to Young in terms of pure numbers in a lot fewer snaps.

“If you get all those pressures in San Francisco, they end up as sacks, because other guys will be getting pressures as well,” Brian said.

A” lot of this defense is really pretty similar as it was in ’21, theere's not that much difference,” JP said, “and that year, in six games with Smith-Williams and Toohill as the starting defensive ends, the Commanders went 4-2, and their points per game dropped from 29.9 to 17.5 and the yards per game dropped from 400 to 280.”

Analytics are analytics but the numbers don’t like, and as Jack Del Rio said Thursday, “we’re going to hunt as a pack.”

“We’ve seen them be productive, but I think we've gone to the well too many times,” BMitch said. “8We keep starting slow and then all of a sudden we keep saying, oh, we're gonna get better.’ Teams right now are throwing the ball on us, they’ve been doing it all year.”
