With the Sam Howell trade happening late Thursday, BMitch & Finlay did not get a chance to react until Friday morning, when a solo JP gave this synopsis:
“Where are all the idiots who told me I was wrong when thy signed Mariota, that it was going to be a Mariota vs. Sam battle? I was right, you were wrong, eat it!” JP said. “Seriously, I think this was a win-win. Sam showed a lot of good, and we have to be cognizant of that in a year where there was a lot of bad, but we saw all the good and bad of his scouting report. I like Sam, I liked his game, but offensively, they were a mess all along, all the way back to when Ron said Sam was the guy with no competition. The offense and QB play were meh, and the signs of dysfunction were there early.”
It’s such big news, though, that BMitch had to call in to give his take:
“They were smart to get better positioning in the middle of the draft, and it works for both teams,” Brian said. “It shows Adam Peters knows how to play chess, man. Sam has talent, and ultimately, they will try to get that talent out of him. We saw Sam at his best, and if he can do that consistently, you can see a much better player. He has a chance to sit behind Geno Smith and learn a little bit instead of being forced in there. They played against Sam, they saw it; if they can improve the bad things he did, maybe they have a good quarterback. But the Commanders have a plan, and Sam didn’t fit with it.”
Here’s the kicker, though: much like he was Thursday morning to discuss Bobby Wagner, Drab was still around after finishing Friday’s Junkies, and he, our resident Seahawks superfan and beat writer for (insert fictitious Tacoma-based outlet here), is NOT HAPPY.
“I am not a fan of this trade. I did not like what Sam Howell did on the field – 21 interceptions and 65 sacks? I didn’t like him coming out of the draft, I didn’t like him starting, I didn’t like him as a backup, and I sure as heck don’t like him as a backup on my team now!” Drab ranted. “I’m frustrated. I know he’s just one of 53 guys, but we gave up draft capital that we don’t have when we have so many holes. We cut everybody, we signed nobody, John Schneider stabbed Pete Carrol in the back, and now he’s making decisions, and we all wanted Michael Penix. Geno Smith is twice the quarterback Sam Howell is, and if they didn’t want him, they’d have cut him when his roster bonus was due.”
