The 1 p.m. hour of Tuesday's BMitch & Finlay was chock full of NFL Draft talk, which started with the hosts talking about where the Commanders might look at No. 16, and ended with Pete Hailey from NBC Sports Washington jumping on after some serious phone troubles in the studio to discuss the same!
And here's the problem, in Hailey's eyes: No. 16 is a lose-lose spot, even if they come away with a solid pick.
"I know the best-case scenario is to trade back, but I'm starting to become dubious of that," Hailey said. "I know you think the draft is perhaps lacking in overall talent, so 16 could be seen as the end point where some of the truly good prospects are going and a team wants to jump up - but I look at it as, if the draft is extra uncertain, why would anyone want to move up and sacrifice some other picks for an unsure thing? I'm beginning to think trading is more of a longshot."
BMitch said that if the draft is uncertain at 16, then it's "trade back and get who?" - but more picks, plus later picks, may be better?
"It's trade back and get who, but it's trade back and get more who's," Hailey said. "That's the name of the game, and some of the best teams in the NFL just get pick after pick and have rookie classes that are so huge, so you maximize your chances to find true depth chart stalwarts. With that trade back, they might find themselves in a better spot for some of the tackles that they like? Trading back puts them in maybe a better spot unless someone crazy falls - but I don't know if Martin Mayhew will have the same luck he did last year."
And of course, if someone crazy does fall, there's a point where the Commanders have to be that team to go up a few spots and get a steal - or do they?
"If Stroud or Richardson is within striking distance, I'd love to see them do it, and Ron Rivera could sell that to new ownership, but I don't think they will," Hailey said. "They're more on the conservative side, and I don't think they want to lose draft picks. You can't round out the roster and make it better overall by sending away picks."
