Seems like Ron Rivera wasn’t kidding when h told John Keim last week that he has ‘multiple opportunities’ to keep coaching, as reports surfaced Monday that Ron is going to interview for the Eagles’ DC job that officially opened up with Sean Desai’s dismissal on Sunday night.
And, hey, good for him!
“I respect that Ron really wants to get back in, and dude's been a head coach for over 10 years, clearly he wants to stick in the game,” JP Finlay said.
“Yeah, but I think coaches are just like players; when you hear someone who's gonna retire in the last game that they play, or a guy gets released from a team, and the last game is not good, you see them trying to get back in, because they don't wanna let that be their last performance,” BMitch replied. “I'm sure the last five games he coached as the D-Coodinator, that doesn't sit well with him. Kinda hard to walk away when you did not show. I’m sure he wants to go out there and try to change that narrative.”
Landfill jokingly asked if Rivera is trying to go to Philly for the same reason BMitch did, and well, Brian got a little defensive.
“I went to Philly because I could still ball and they wanted me,” he said. “I ran for 100 yards for a touchdown my last game here!”
On the other point, though, JP went through the numbers with Ron as the DC, and they weren’t great – and that’s in part because he’s the one that bought the bad groceries, so to speak.
“My biggest criticism of Ron is talent evaluation; I don't know that the right person exists, but he was the wrong person for the job he built for himself, right?” JP asked. “What I know that Ron does well is gets his guys to respond to him and play hard for him, and stay in it. Certainly his background on the defensive side of the ball makes me believe he could go back to this position and thrive – and Sirianni’s a young guy, there's real questions if he lost the locker room, so I think Rivera makes a lot of sense for Philly.”
Maybe, but Brian doesn’t even think Ron did himself any favors with that even back in training camp, but then again, a DC doesn’t talk to the media as much, so maybe?
Neither Brian nor Jeff Walker would hire him based on results, and Landini wouldn't do it if he was the Eagles because 'that's the guy who becomes interim head coach when you get fired,' but how do you feel? Take a listen to the crew’s entire convo above!
