The Commanders are making a move to beef up their offensive line: per multiple reports, the team is signing interior lineman Max Scharping.
The news was first reported by CBS Sports’ Matt Zanitz and confirmed by Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic on Friday night.
Scharping, 29, was on the Commanders’ practice squad for the first month of the 2024 season, but spent the remainder of that year and all of 2025 with the Steelers, playing in just two games - mostly on special teams.
He was originally a second-round pick of the Texans in 2019 after three straight All-MAC seasons at Northern Illiinois, and in three seasons in Houstoni, he played 48 games (with 33 starts) between both guard spots.
Scharping then spent two seasons as a reserve with the Bengals before his two years in Pittsburgh. He also has spent training camp time with the Eagles.
Nick Allegretti’s calf injury has left the Commanders’ center job wide open, with rookie Matt Gulbin and journeyman Trey Hill as the only healthy true centers in camp – so the addition of Scharping could help shuffle some parts in the middle of the line.
