Ben Standig is a twice-weekly guest on The Team 980, but with all the chaos going on around the first few hours of NFL legal tampering, he double-dipped Monday and joined Grant Paulsen to give his quick thoughts on the two signings today from Dallas, center Tyler Biadasz and DE Dorance Armstrong.
“We should logically be expecting Dan Quinn to bring over a bunch of guys from Dallas; as much as we mocked the previous situation, it is logical to bring in gus you’re familiar with who can set the tone and help the team,” Standig said. “In this case, Washington’s defense needs a bunch of guys, and Dallas has several free agents that were effective for them last year, including Armstrong.”
Rivera-era jokes aside, Armstrong was more of a rotational guy in Dallas, but that may be a good thing given his output and his mileage.
“He’s never been a full-time starter but he has 16 sacks the last two years. No doubt it helps that Micah Parsons is the primary focus, but Armstrong has proven to be a valuable rotation piece if nothing else,” Standig said. “I would imagine he’d be penciled in to start at this point, but this year, they need enough help around Jon Allen and Daron Payne to help maximize them and help the back seven. He’s not the sexiest signing, but it’s effective, and a guy who knows the defense right away.”
And as for Biadasz, center was a huge issue last year, and with an offensive line that’s mostly starting from scratch again left of the middle, the guy in the middle is a huge asset.
“I think center was very high on their list – the way I was looking at it is they sign interior linemen in free agency and look for a tackle in the draft based on the way the board is falling in the second round,” Standig said. “You don’t want a young center with a young quarterback, even if it’s Sam Howell. They have been an absolute disaster with injuries, and Biadasz is very durable – and this is what good teams do, is start with the lines and build from there.”
Take a listen above for Standig’s entire segment, including thoughts on where Washington goes from here!
