G&D were live at the Bethesda Theater Friday and had to discuss something interesting that Daniel Jeremiah said Thursday about the NFL Draft: could the Commanders NOT go QB at No. 2?
“I’m praying it’s some kind of smoke screen, because this is officially silly season now,” Danny said, over Grant’s protests. “I need it to be that they’re drafting a QB, unless something happens that’s so irresponsible by some other team that has the steamies that they have no choice but to trade back, although I have no idea what that might look like. The thing I would have to get over, though, as a frustrated radio host/lifelong fan who has swung through this bag of turds, is that this new regime doesn’t have my angst – so if he has a different strategy, it will make me freak out, because I’ve been starving for a franchise quarterback like the big boys have for years now. Adam Peters hasn’t had that starvation, so I’m going to have to get over that, but man, it’s not going to be easy.
“I would just be disappointed, I guess not unlike the coaching search, but that’s different because everyone is going to have their proclivities, and Peters said they were looking for a leader,” Grant replied. “I think that’s just something you ay at the podium, but clearly, they meant it, and I can make sense of that and move on. The QB would be tougher though, because you don’t have one, and you have the No. 2 overall pick. See how that conversation went? That’s it, that’s the whole conversation.”
And, unfortunately, it plays into Grant’s old insecurities about this being the Rivera era 2.0.
“When Ron Rivera and the Marty Party got here, their first big decision was the No. 2 overall pick, not unlike Peters and his brigade,” GP said. “The first huge decision is take the QB or not; Rivera and his group kicked the can down the road a bit, and that ended up biting them in the butt every day they were here for the rest of their time, and dooming them in the end. Now, that doesn’t mean history will repeat itself, but you are passing on the best way to do it, specifically speaking. They had no problem doing that with the head coach, and if you’re a good enough GM that tou can surround talent and hit in the later rounds and free agency, it won’t matter, and nothing’s certain, but the best way to get a franchise QB is to be picking super-high in the draft in a year where there are really good quarterback prospects.”
