Scott Abraham, who is now the Sports Director at ABC7 in DC, joined G&D Tuesday with a little look back at the 19 free agents the Commanders have signed – such a big class you LITERALLY can’t tell the players without a scorecard.
“I was joking with some of the guys on the beat like I'm literally gonna have to bring a roster sheet into the locker room in camp to figure out who these guys are,” Abraham laughed. “I’m a little surprised at how big the turnover has been, because I kind of took Adam Peters at his word that they're gonna build through the draft and supplement through free agency, but clearly they did not like the roster they inherited, so changes had to be made. I was pleased that they brought back Cornelius Lucas today as depth at offensive tackle, but there are still a lot of holes they can address come draft time.”
What’s the one move that’s most puzzling, though?
“I think Zach Ertz. Obviously he's a name, but he’s getting up there in age and had some injury issues,” Abraham said. “I understand the connection there with Kliff Kingsbury, but I’m not sold on Zach being made the everyday dynamite tight end. I can definitely see them going after maybe a young tight end in in the draft. I think Zach has some gas left in the tank, but clearly it's not gonna be the Zach Ertz that we know when he played in Philly.”
And in the opposite vein, which three names are on the podium for gold, silver, and bronze as the best moves?
“Bronze I’m gonna go with Jeremy Chinn, I think he's gonna be a nice fit for the Commanders defense and what they want to do replacing Kam Curl, and my silver would go to Austin Ekeler – he was injured last year and that was kind of a big deterrent of why he didn't have that strong of a season, but the dude scores touchdowns and I think he's gonna be a great guy in the red zone,” Abraham said. “And gold, I’m really high on Frankie Luvu. I think this is the perfect linebacker with physicality and motor that Dan Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr. can work with; you have Bobby Wagner on the list, but he's gonna be that more of that leadership role. I still have reservations of how much he has left in the tank, but I think that's more of a leadership culture type signing, getting a Bobby Wagner to kind of mentor a Frankie Luvu.”
