We’re coming close to the end of Jay Gruden’s weekly NFL segments for this season on Grant & Danny, and when he visited on post-conference championship Monday, he of course had to break down both Ravens-Chiefs and Niners-Lions, and look ahead to the Kansas City-San Francisco Super Bowl.
Jay gave an interesting perspective on Dan Campbell leaving six points on the board to go for it twice on fourth down, saying, ‘the first one was one of the worst decisions I’ve ever seen, and no one can convince me it’s the right call,’ noting how he made his bones in the Arena Football League where scoring came easily and you need a real good reason to agree with analytics on fourth downs, because it’s more of a gut feeling.
But, after all that, as well as Gruden noting how Patrick Mahomes is on a Tom Brady-esque trajectory and Travis Kelce is in the GOAT convo as well at tight end, we got into DC goodness, specifically the state of the Commanders’ coaching search – and he had these specific questions he would ask each of the Top 5 or so candidates left in the search.
