Brad Spielberger joined a solo Danny Rouhier on the eve of Commanders training camp, and wanted to focus heavily on two specific Commanders players, one on each side of the ball.
Offense was Sam Howell, and while you might think defense would be Chase Young, Montez Sweat, or maybe Emmanuel Forbes…it was actually Kamren Curl, who has come into his own and may be in line for an extension.
But, with all the defensive players the Commanders have to pay, what is a down defensive back going to be worth?
“We have a metric that measures the versatility of safeties, and he shows up at the very top of the list, because he can do everything you can ask of a player,” Spielberger said, “and this is more economics than anything else, but you’re going to get more discounted deals on late Day 3 draft picks – a guy who has made about $2 million in the NFL has an incentive to get money in his pocket. You know you can get hurt and things may not work out in this league, and there’s always a dozen starting-caliber safeties ready to replace you.”
Three years and $40 million, and maybe a push for a little more, is Spielberger’s projection based on some comps, but perhaps the Commanders can bring that down a bit.
“The key is you leverage this to say we want to keep you and think you’re a foundational building block for this team, and you can probably get a decent discount that comes with draft status,” Spielberger said. “I haven’t heard a word about out, but I do wonder where talks stand, and I think they should prioritize getting that deal done.”
